The idea for Big Hill Cycle was born on the roads and trails in the southern Alberta area. Taking a break after a long climb or sitting on a bumper or tailgate at a trail head the idea grew for a while before we realized it had become something real.
With over 40 years combined working with bikes and cyclists in the Calgary area we have seen the sport evolve to become something much more than "just" a hobby or pastime for many. We've have had the pleasure of watching tiny tots grow up through various wheel sizes to become passionate cyclists for life. This is a big part of why are are proud to call ourselves a family bike shop and carry product to reflect those values.
To the Cochrane and Calgary Area Biking Community
What are we doing?
Our store has been and continues to be extensively sanitized with a virucide. We are also using hospital-grade disinfection products. All of our staff and their close contacts remain healthy and are asymptomatic. Members of our team are not permitted to come to work if they or their close contacts have any symptoms that might suggest an illness.
When in the community, our staff are practicing safe physical distancing (2 meters at all times), and we are limiting these interactions as much as possible.
What does “Open” mean?
We are open for business but in a modified way. Our hours are the following:
10 am – 5 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday
10 am – 8 pm on Thursday
For bike servicing needs we ask that if you are feeling unwell, you hold off on having your bike picked up by our staff. We don’t want to be spreading anything unnecessarily to them and then to others.
Should we be open given the current situation?
We have struggled with this question. However, many health professionals in our province agree that people still need exercise to maintain both physical and mental wellbeing. This is particularly important with increased self-isolation along with fitness and recreational centres being closed. Cycling provides an excellent option for some exercise as it also allows for physical distancing while still getting outdoors. If you prefer to stay at home, we can help set you up with a trainer.
The Alberta government shut down all non-essential businesses effective March 27th. Bike shops were deemed to be essential businesses and are permitted to continue to operate. For many, biking is not a hobby or just an opportunity to get some exercise, but it is a method of transportation as well.
We want to be here for those that need us. Whether it is getting your commuter back on the path so that you can get to work as an essential worker, or you're looking to get a new bike so you can go for a ride after a long day of working from home; we are part of the community and want to be here for those who need us in any way that we can.
Also, we would rather be in the store staring at all these awesome bikes and accessories instead of being at home, bothering our spouses who are working remotely…!!
We will continue to adapt to whatever our municipal, provincial, and federal governments ask us to do. We all have a duty to protect one another, and that needs to come first.
When riding, please be sure to continue to practice safe physical distancing with anyone you don’t live with. We have an abundance of trails, paths, and roads in and around Cochrane and Calgary to provide everyone an opportunity to get outdoors safely.
